The AmeriGlide Hercules II Vertical Platform Lift is ETL certified. This approval is based on meeting ANSI 17.5 Electrical Requirements and all facets of current ANSI codes for VPLs.
Electrical components in the unit are UL & CSA listed. In addition to being registered with the FDA, the AmeriGlide Hercules II Vertical Platform Lift meets ASME A18 Platform Lift Code.
The AmeriGlide Hercules II Vertical Platform Lift must be installed in such a manner that it meets all codes: local, city, county, state and national. These codes are a series of rules and regulations which must be adhered to in order to legally complete the installation of this product. Much confusion can arise when attempting to obtain the proper code information. Go to your state-level elevator regulations for guidance, or ask your AmeriGlide representative for information on where to find this.
Codes vary by district, city, municipality, county, state or any other jurisdictional authority. This guide will tell you how to get the process started. The AmeriGlide Hercules II Vertical Platform Lift complies with ASME A18.1-2008. This is the standard upon which most jurisdictions base their codes and regulations. It covers installation, testing, inspection, maintenance, alteration and repair to vertical platform lifts. It is available for purchase on the ANSI e-Store web site. A18 is essentially a series of safety rules and regulations for VPLs.
Armed with a familiarity of, or at least a reference to, A18.1, contact the Building and Safety Commission with the local municipal government. Explain that you are installing a vertical platform lift in either a residential or commercial setting and that your equipment meets ANSI/ASME A18.1-2008 regulations. This shows basic knowledge of the application and establishes your credibility. It also gives the person you are speaking with a starting point if they are unfamiliar with the codes you need.
If they are still unsure of where to begin, ask to speak to someone who handles building permits or fire and safety regulations or the local elevator inspector. Remember, at this point, you are the expert because you know what you want. Reference A18.1 and eventually you will get the answers to your code questions. If you find a code you cannot comply with, a variance may be possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for one.
The finished installation may need to be inspected. Ask for the name and phone number of the inspector early in the process if needed. They can offer a wealth of information for successfully completing your project.
